How right sized boxes cut your shipping costs
Couriers do not just charge for weight. They charge for space. A box that is a little too big costs you on every single order.

Dimensional weight in one paragraph
Couriers calculate a dimensional (or volumetric) weight from the box size and bill whichever is higher: the actual weight or the dimensional weight. A light product in a big box gets billed as if it were heavy. Each carrier uses its own formula, so check your rate card, but the lesson is the same everywhere: smaller boxes cost less to ship.
Where the money goes
- Higher dimensional weight charges on oversized boxes.
- Void fill (paper, air pillows, bubble wrap) and the time to add it.
- Damage and returns when products move around inside the box.
- Storage space for boxes that are bigger than they need to be.
How to right size
- List your top products and order combinations by volume.
- Measure each product at its widest points.
- Group them into two to four box sizes that fit with little spare room.
- Add simple inserts for fragile or oddly shaped items.
